How being fast impacts (design cont. part 2)

Needs requiring speed

The demand for time and its limited availability within which every project must be completed posses a big challenge in the competitive market,  so continuing our concept of design topic, here we will try to visit the section of TIME which is basically the deadline for each product that it gets from design to production level. If we look back at the past and see the huge production of cars that was introduced during the time of Henry Ford who recognized the large demand for automobile due to a big & emerging middle class who wanted a mode of transportation which was mainly private, similarly we could observe the similar patterns in the production of digital items particularly after the invention of transistors that enabled the market of radios and television to emerge at first place. This concept of innovation was extrapolated to the field of fashion when Amancio Ortega figured
out the importance of the availability of Decent fashionable apparels at cheaper rates which led the whole industry towards implementation of what we call today as FAST FASHION.

Revisiting the events

A quick review of what we discussed so far is the introduction of MASS PRODUCTION in automobiles, the revolution in the digital brought by the development of semiconductor driven transistors & the clothing industry  which saw a big change from the Rapid mode of design & production methodology when took the centre stage of planning and execution for better sales.

Market relation with productive measures

Now each of these events took place primarily because of enhancing the profits of the organization along with satisfying the large demands from existing generation of people. In all the cases we could find there is the element time that is hugely influencing the quality and quantity of the products, let us move a little further and hit the world of marketing based on the system most the companies ow uses for reducing the defects in mass scale produced goods- probably the corporate are well aware of this method but for normal and younger people it may be  a mystery  because certainly, it was for me which I came to know about just a few months ago, therefore, I thought it is worth while mentioning it, this practice of reducing the defects in products is known as Six Sigma - Sigma or Standard deviation you might have heard it in maths & physics classes, now here it signifies th concept number of defects present in a million opportunities assume it as the number of products.

The dictator

For a Six Sigma verified service or product, it is said that only 3.4 defects approx. is seen in million output which we all could realize is significantly less though the number may not be accurate every time still it exerts heavy influence on the production of the goods with respect to expected quality. There are 2 Fundamental ways to carry out the whole Process which could be discussed later but at present keeping the track with rapid design and production, lets head back to the concept of Fast Fashion, it is to be taken into consideration that we are trying to do a mass scale production within a very short period of time & that also the produced goods are new each time in terms of design and structure, then it limits the existence of a particular pattern or design to a certain duration after which that gets replaced by a fresh style, this criterion of fast delivery of new designs has led to a congestive market dominated by number of products coming out every year and almost destabilizing the fashion world. Some see it as a welcoming way for more innovative ideas and others consider it to be reducing the inventive qualities of the designers as they get a minimal amount of time  for imagining new solutions that impact the surroundings in a much more connected manner, the authenticity of the creations losses their touch & level of refinement takes a dip.

So I have used the term INNOVATION here as you can spot and this is a very popular topic nowadays as we everyone uses this word, but how it set its link to design and what we have discussed just now?

The answer lies in its core meaning that is INNOVATION = Invention x Commercialization
(as per MIT OCW explained by Bill Aulet)

  • The invention is the discovery of a product which could be seen in the form of a new design or feature  added to an existing one or may be completely new depending on its development
  • The stage of commercialization which is all about making people aware of the product and allowing it to claim a market value by attracting the right customer and resulting in a sale

One must notice the fact after analyzing his own surroundings that the principle governing factor  for driving Innovation is actually not the inventive side but its the commerce which makes the difference to claim a major position in the current market

If we go through the Fast Fashion technique again which is described above we would see how designs got compromised that is the inventive part and more attention provided on bringing new products within period of a month, it was the commercial strategy  & therefore becomes an ideal example for demonstrating how Innovation is carried through a commercialized form of a product.

All these points mentioned are with respect to the production and claiming their respective market is based on the understanding of how the process functions and implemented to meet their goals.
